6 Ahangama Surf Spots You Need To Paddle Out At!

When it comes to the best Ahangama surf spots, you’re pretty spoilt for choice no matter what level of surfer you are - it’s why it’s a must visit location for any Sri Lanka Surf trip!

Whether you’re learning to surf, looking to progress your skills or an experienced surf looking for something a bit punchier, there’s a surf spot in Ahangama to suit.

And here are 6 our of our personal favourites, with many of them walking distance from our front door!

1.Kabalana beach

One of the most famous surf spots in Ahangama, Kabalana Beach covers a lot of bases. This sandy bottom beach break offers up plenty of peaks for intermidiates and above, working on a huge variety of swell sizes - so just double check before you paddle out!

The inside section is also one of the best places to learn to surf in Sri Lanka too - with a long, rolling white water section which is perfect for beginners looking to nail the basics.

2.The Rock

Technically The Rock is still part of Kabalana Beach, but it’s certainly a surf spot on it’s own merit. Named after the iconic rock which sits just a bit further out from the take off spot, The Rock is one of the punchiest waves on the South Coast of Sri Lanka so its best suited to mid range intermediates and above. An A-Frame take off offers up both left and right hand rides, but the left is certainly the longer option.

The Rock can handle some solid swell and with a small take off spot it can become a bit intense, so be respectful and make sure it’s within your skill level before paddling out.

3.Sticks

Named after the famous stilt fisherman on the shoreline, Sticks is a great spot for those progressing from beginner to interndiate, looking for something with a little bit more shape. Situated right in front of Sticks Cafe (which also offer board rental and lessons incase you’re hunting around!) it’s a semi reef break, with a few peaks to choose from.

Like most spots in the area it works ona. range of swell and things can get pretty fast and punchy when the right swell rolls through. Great fun for those progressing onto shortboards though and looking to practice their turns.

4.Marshmellows

Like the sweets, this wave it usually fat and squishy! This rolling deep reef break is ideal for anyone from beginner upwards and is a favourite for those riding longboards, mid lengths or fishes. A super long wall, it’s perfect for gaining confidence and learning turns.

When the swell picks up though, this is always a favourite for all levels of surfer and can handle some serious size, so don’t let it catch you off guard with how playful it looks from the beach when it gets bigger!

5.Animals / Insights

Sitting in front of Insight Resort, just to the left of Marshmellows, this one can be quick and punchy, breaking over a reef. The right hander is a bit shorter and finishes off pretty shallow, but when the left is running it’s really fun and offers up some heaps fun rides.

A favourite of the Secret Spot Villa team this is usually where you’ll find us when the swells pumping!

6.Dreamsea Left

Sitting directly in front of Dreamsea and the iconic rope swing, Dreamsea Left is a favourite with longboarders - offering up a cruisey left hander than finishes off in a deeper channel, allowing a really easy paddle back out to the peak. It’s can be a bit fickle, but when it’s working it’s an absolute blast.
