Whens The Best Time To Surf In Sri Lanka?

If you’re planning a Sri Lanka surf trip, then the first big question you need to ask is “when is the best time to surf in Sri Lanka” .

Sri Lanka is blessed with incredible waves all year round, however it’s split across two distinct seasons - so make sure you’re heading to the right location at the right time of year.

The good thing is, the surf season for both coasts all coincides with dry/sunny season for it too, so not only will you have surf, you’ll have plenty of sunshine too, one of the many reasons Sri Lanka is such a popular surf destination!

South Coast Season - late Oct to late May

The South Coast season (which is where we are) runs from late October thorugh to late May each year, although the surf is still plenty fun slightly either side of that, although the weather will be a little more unpredictable.

The South Coast covers all the key surf areas such as Ahangama, Weligame, Midigama, Mirissa, Hiriketiya and more so there are plenty of spots to choose from.

Peak surf season for the South Coast of Sri Lanka is December to March though, when you’ll find the most consistent swells and sunny weather.

East Coast season - late april to late sept

When it comes to the surf season on the East Coast of Sri Lanka, it basically starts/finishes either side of the South Coast season, which means if your trip overlaps two season, you can simply switch coast to chase the swell and weather!

During late April to late September the place to head is certainly Arugam Bay, which is the centre of the East Coast surf scene and the reeling point breaks start cranking.

Peak surf season is July and August, when the weather and waves are at their best.
